It starts out with a lot of springtime imagery - flowers, trees, fruit, etc. But as the chapter continues the use of season because ironic because of the bombing on the squadron that Milo arranged, as the bombing results in several death and hospitalizations. The irony is heightened even further because Milo is the mess hall officer, who is supposedly in charge of feeding and sustaining the lives of the other officers. I think this is emphasizes the risk of death during wartime; even at home base, danger is lurking.
There's also an element of politics within this chapter. Milo explains that his business thrives because countries in the war need food. Similarly during WWII, many private companies that controlled steel, wheat, and other materials encountered huge business booms during the war. This raises the question of whether war or conflict is necessary to continue business and prosperity. The idea of war and business is asserted in the final section of the chapter as Milo states that the government shouldn't intervene in business affairs.
