Additionally, O'Brien becomes a symbol for the Devil's temptation, as he offers Winston his salvation and safety if he accepts what he knows is evil and untrue. In his final act of conditioning Winston in Room 101, O'Brien offers him a final deal: to die by his worst fear of rats, or to betray his love for Julia in a selfish act of survival. Winston's temptations overcome him, as he cries "Do it to Julia!" His reward, or punishment, for surviving is becoming one with the Party and Big Brother and denouncing the power of Emmanuel Goldstein, who as we know acts as a Christ figure.
